Business is Personal

We're all about numbers. I mean, as accountants (and accountancy software developers), we're all about business and businesses are all about numbers – right?

After visiting Accountex this year I left with a slightly different view. It felt bigger and busier this year. There was noticeable dominance of all things online and a steady stream of accountants mingled and met to see the latest software in the industry.

I'd go so far as to say it was a fun atmosphere and there were stands with built in bars and remote control racing cars and all kinds of competitions, giveaways and freebies. Wandering round I could see people kept bumping into those they knew with lots of vigorous hand shaking. I was reminded that business is about people as much, if not more than it is about numbers.

Speaking to lots of startup accountants there were mixed feelings about what was on offer at Accountex. Although now dominant in presence, many software as a service businesses were still in their infancy and often didn't deliver quite what was needed. There was however an optimism about the future potential and the low price at which such innovative software could be delivered.

My personal highlight was after explaining Checkmybooks to a new startup accountant I'd not met before. He was so delighted with what was on offer, and the price at which we could provide it, he felt the need to hug it out. Had I looked closer I may have seen a tear of joy in his eye.

When focused on the numbers I easily forget how personal business is. It's all about relationships.

So, what did we learn at a busy Xerocon London?

Jonathan and Rob on smooth-talking duties here

Xerocon 2016 was much more grown-up this year, with more stand space, smoothie bars rather than coffee bars (my vote is to go back to the baristas) and an incredible 1300 attendees.

It makes it very hard work talking to delegates in the relatively short breaks. With so many people around it's difficult to be as personal as we would like. Despite this there was a lot of enthusiasm for Checkmybooks with some visitors bringing their team members back for a second look later. If you need a more relaxed personal demo please book one here.

From existing customers we had some great suggestions for new features, review points and schedules. Please keep the suggestions coming, we want to help you complete your year-end jobs as quickly as possible.

Shock horror, we even came across Xero accountants willing to admit they still had some Sage customers! They were delighted when they realised that with Checkmybooks they could stop messing with backup files, throw away their Sage software and work with client's Sage desktop data in the cloud, just as conveniently as with Xero data.

All in all a very successful event with visitors even taking the opportunity to sign up for their free trial whilst they were sitting in the auditorium.

Roll on Xerocon 2017.

Xerocon London 2016

You'll find us at stand 30 and you can chat with Adrian, Matthew, Rob, Nathan and Jonathan

I'm pleased to say that we'll be exhibiting at our 3rd Xerocon London next week - on the 9th and 10th of February. If you're there too, please come and chat to us at stand 30.

We really want to show you how Checkmybooks can check your clients' accounting records for you - making your practice more profitable and giving you your time back. But, if you know us from our Movemybooks work, we're happy to talk about that too. There's even a "coming soon" new product you might just twist our arm to reveal to you.

Our team is there for 2 days and we're there to talk to customers old and new, so please do pay a visit.

2020 Annual Conference

We are delighted to be sponsoring the 2020 Annual Conference, which takes place on the 15th and 16th October at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Over 280 practising accountants are already booked to attend, making this one of the largest Practice Management & Development conferences in the UK.

There is an exceptional line up of guest speakers and excellent content, including Sir Clive Woodward OBE and Rob Nixon.  2020 founders Gordon Gilchrist, Ian Fletcher and Chris Frederiksen will also share their insights of consulting with accountancy firms across the globe.

This conference is an excellent opportunity to network with progressive accountancy firms and individuals shaping the profession.

As a valued customer of Ledgerscope, we have negotiated a special 20% discount off the conference price. Simply apply the coupon code: ac-partner20 once you have added the item to your basket.

We will be demonstrating Checkmybooks at the conference and we'd love to meet you and show how to zoom through your year-end accounts jobs.

Accountex 2015 - a new baby meets the World

Last week I was fortunate enough to be exhibiting our freshly released Checkmybooks at Accountex to a warm and receptive crowd. Standing in front of an 8ft tall print out of the most useful screen of our product definitely made my week. As our founder himself is a chartered accountant, we've always known that the product is useful and fills a very real purpose and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be able to see what people thought of it in person.

It was exciting to be able to demonstrate what we've been hard at work on for the past few years and to see the look on people's faces as they worked out how much time it would save them for every client they had. All of the accountants we talked with not only understood but had first-hand experience of the three main problems that we're solving with Checkmybooks:

  • The pain of handling backups of accounting files from clients
  • Spending lots of time looking for errors, mis-postings and inconsistencies
  • Ensuring that the adjustments they make are processed back into the client's records

What was even more valuable for us though, was the feedback we were getting as we were talking with accountants. The majority of the suggestions (we're pleased to say) were already on our to-do list, but there were a handful that we'd not thought of that are going to make their way into Checkmybooks very soon.

This is the first of many milestones for Checkmybooks, as we continue to evolve and improve our product. This past week has confirmed that we're definitely heading in the right direction.

Xerocon London 2015

After exhibiting at the 2013 London event with our Movemybooks hats on, for the 2015 Xerocon in London we went in Checkmybooks mode.

It was a great opportunity to show accountants our new design style and the new features added in recent months. We were also able to grab some excellent feedback for use in future development.

As nice bonus was being able to listen to some influential speakers and catch-up with other add-on partners.
